another option for nation-state governance

“In the fundamentalist pursuit of capitalism people are treated not as an end, but as a means… Unrestrained market fundamentalism and financial capitalism… are void of morals and moderation."

- Yukio Hatoyama , Japan’s newly elected Prime Minister-elect

from a NY times op-ed piece.

Isn't that wonderful!!

Hatoyama has also declared that Japan will continue to be nuclear free! Yes, that's right...even in a world where it's ok for the world powers to have nuclear weapons. That's like walking away from someone who wants to fight --knowing you could smoke him; or taking the job that makes $20,000 less a year because it will serve other people and not just yourself; or leaving your front door open in a thug-dominated community and being willing to welcome anyone who enters...

For those who say that the market is the world’s future, that it will self-regulate and do good for all…

I say --beating someone up because you're tougher, getting more money because you have "earned" it, and closing your doors because you’re concerned about your possessions-- is not living for the good of others and not a future I want.

Don’t pervert what is right. Prosperity is not only for the privileged. Market efficiency will knock down with an iron fist those who are already on their knees.
